Well, what are you supposed to say about someone who can do things with fibre and colour that you’ve never seen before? Bernadette Fox opened the door to her gallery deep in the Boyne Valley and offered a welcoming smile to a couple of travel weary Aussies. Their weariness dissipated immediately when they gazed the quality of the work displayed on the walls. From a distance one could be looking at acrylic or oil paintings but no, the work was fibre art. On closer examination, the observer notes the discerning choice of colour in the fabric, the fine stitching and attention to detail in its realisation. The works on display were nothing less than fine art of an astonishingly high level. We bought two landscapes that appealed instantly and pondered over several of the floral representations as well as the abstracts. The choice was not easy because each work, in its individual way, demanded to come home with us. In the end, common sense prevailed and we left with but two.

I cannot speak highly enough of the quality of Bernadette’s work. Her flair with colour and form, and the way she carries it off in fabric and fibre is a tour de force. Her work is unique in my experience and immediately impressive. In fact, I may hop on a plane and pick up a couple of more pieces tomorrow! So, do yourself a favour, visit the gallery, speak to Bernadette and be prepared to be impressed. Her astonishing ability with colour and fibre speaks for itself in the art she produces.
