This beautiful neck piece was created at a workshop with another fabulous tutor from Irish Felt makers Association – Gabi McGrath. This is a wet felting process. A lot of work goes into making a piece of jewellery. The piece is made as one long piece with the stone in the center. Layers of wool are continuously added on top of each other, shaped, dampened and worked up to felt the fibres together. I enclosed the stone at the beginning of the process and added layers of fibres over it, the felting process continues over a long period of time as more layers are added and worked into the piece until we reached a stage where I was satisfied that the felting was secure enough to cut the layers to the front of the stone. I continued to rub the edges around the stone between my fingers to felt the edges. The process takes hours to complete but is worth the effort and I came away with a beautiful piece of felted jewellery.
