West Coast of Ireland – The Twelve Pins, Connemara,

The late Summer sun descending on the distant landscape of small lakes, ochre covered bog land and burnt grasses set against the backdrop of the quartz topped Twelve Pins Mountain range throw up a myriad of gold, amber and red shades as the sun sets on the horizon.

One afternoon in late Summer on a drive through the Gaeltacht region of Connemara en-route to Kylemore Abbey we came across Glengowla mines near Oughterard, Co. Galway, where in 1850 silver and lead were mined from the roots of the Connemara Mountains, Connemara Marble, gold, dolerite quartz and rare green and blue octahedral fluorite were also discovered there. The mines closed in 1865. We visited the abandoned mines to get a guided tour from the owners. We tried our luck to pan for gold and gems at the gold panning station with the promise we could keep any gems we found! I had better luck in the gift shop and came away with beautiful beads and stones for my textile artwork!

Kylemore Abbey lies on a lake in the midst of craggy mountains, peat bogs covered in mosses with boulders of granite and wild isolation. I absolutely love to visit the Abbey and Victorian gardens; their restaurant and gift shop is also a great experience. Beautiful part of Connemara.

Dyed layers of Silk Scrim in Rust and dark brown together with various shades of wool fibres pick up the colours of the landscape perfectly, I have layered the Merino Wool with Dyed Silk Fabric, felted mounds, embroidered French Knots and beading for texture, Tones of blues against rich gold, ochre and darker shades of mauve and black interspersed, create the colours of the lakes and landscapes as the sun sets in Connemara.
